Voces

Joan oía voces
y eso la consumió.
Cuando conduzco en la oscuridad
escribo poemas.
Anoche me salté
un stop, ponderando
los saltos de línea.
Al explicárselo,
el policía asintió
y acto seguido
me multó.
Alguien que sabe me dijo
que los escritores tienen quince años,
luego llega la repetición
e incluso la locura.
Como Midas, supongo
que todo lo que tocamos se convierte
en poema,
mientras dura el hechizo.
Pero piensa en el poeta después,
tocando los árboles
que siempre ha tocado
sin que ahora suceda nada.
Imagínatelo corriendo de tronco
en tronco, lastimándose
las manos con la áspera corteza.
Quedan solo cinco años.
A veces entierro
mis poemas en el jardín,
guardándolos
para los fríos días venideros.
Quieras que no
eso te consume.

Voices

Joan heard voices,
and she burned for it.
Driving through the dark
I write poems.
Last night I drove through
a stop sign, pondering
line breaks.
When I explained
the policeman nodded,
then he gave me
a ticket.
Someone who knows told me
writers have fifteen years,
then comes repetition,
even madness.
Like Midas, I guess
everything we touch turns
to a poem—
when the spell is on.
But think of the poet after that
touching the trees
he’s always touched,
but this time nothing happens.
Picture him rushing from trunk
to trunk, bruising
his hands on the rough bark.
Only five years left.
Sometimes I bury
my pems in the garden,
saving them
for the cold days ahead.
One way or another
you burn for it.

¿Por qué tus poemas son tan oscuros?

¿No es oscura también la luna
casi todo el tiempo?

Y la página blanca
¿no parece inacabada

sin las manchas oscuras
de los alfabetos?

Cuando Dios ordenó la luz
no proscribió la oscuridad,

en cambio inventó
el ébano y los cuervos

y ese pequeño lunar
de tu pómulo izquierdo.

¿O quisiste preguntar
«por qué estás triste tan a menudo»?

Pregúntale a la luna.
Pregúntale qué ha presenciado.

Why Are Your Poems so Dark?

Isn't the moon dark too,
most of the time?

And doesn't the white page
seem unfinished

without the dark stain
of alphabets?

When God demanded light,
he didn't banish darkness.

Instead he invented
ebony and crows

and that small mole
on your left cheekbone.

Or did you mean to ask
"Why are you sad so often"?

Ask the moon.
Ask what it has witnessed.

Hay poemas

Hay poemas
que nunca han sido escritos,
que se mueven solo a través
de la mente
como por el cielo
de un día en calma;
lentamente la primera palabra
deriva al oeste,
las últimas letras se disuelven
en la lengua,
y lo que resta
es el azul puro
del conocimiento, sin nubes
ni alivio.

There are poems

There are poems
that are never written,
that simply move across
the mind
like skywriting
on a still day:
slowly the first word
drifts west,
the last letters dissolve
on the tongue,
and what is left
is the pure blue
of insight, without cloud
or comfort.
