William Carlos Williams

Paisaje con la caída de Ícaro

Según Brueghel
cuando Ícaro cayó
era primavera;

un agricultor araba
su campo
—todo el esplendor

del año despertaba
hormigueante—
cerca

de la orilla del mar,
ocupado
con lo suyo,

sudando bajo el sol
que había derretido
la cera de las alas;

intrascendente
junto a la costa
hubo un chapoteo

bastante inadvertido:
era
Ícaro ahogándose.

Landscape with the Fall of Icarus

According to Brueghel
when Icarus fell
it was spring

a farmer was ploughing
his field
the whole pageantry

of the year was
awake tingling
near

the edge of the sea
concerned
with itself

sweating in the sun
that melted
the wings' wax

unsignificantly
off the coast
there was

a splash quite unnoticed
this was
Icarus drowning
