La lengua armenia es el hogar
y refugio donde el caminante puede tener
techo, pared y alimento.
En su interior puede encontrar amor y orgullo,
dejando fuera a la hiena y la tormenta.
Durante siglos sus arquitectos se han esforzado
en dar altura a su techos.
Cuántos campesinos han trabajado
día y noche manteniendo sus cajones llenos,
sus lámparas encendidas, sus hornos calientes.
Siempre rejuvenecida, siempre antigua, perdura
siglo a siglo en el camino en el que todo armenio
puede hallarla cuando se ha perdido
en el yermo de su futuro, o su pasado.

The Armenian Language
The Armenian language is the home
and haven where the wanderer can own
roof and wall and nourishment.
He can enter to find love and pride,
locking the hyena and the storm outside.
For centuries its architects have toiled
to give its ceilings height.
How many peasants working
day and night have kept
its cupboards full, lamps lit, ovens hot.
Always rejuvenated, always old, it lasts
century to century on the path
where every Armenian can find it when he’s lost
in the wilderness of his future, or his past.
